TESL

TESL is most often used to describe the profession of Teaching English as a Second Language. People belonging to all age groups, professions, cultural and social backgrounds are flocking to learn English; it's no wonder online TESL courses are popping up everywhere. English is one of the most commonly used languages, after all.

TESL programs are designed for those individuals who are preparing for school paraprofessional positions or service ministries. TESL certification is also very valuable for overseas teaching and an excellent preparation for missions and cross-cultural experiences, and it is now possible to get your TESL certification online – making it even more convenient to get into this burgeoning field.

Some claim that TESL is a de facto profession by virtue of being part of the teaching profession. For example, TESL is not considered to be a profession by the majority of Korean employers. It doesn't help that there were several certified TESL scam groups recently exposed. There are quite a few black list and gray list sites that can help you identify who is legitimate and who may not be.

Getting Into The TESL Profession

Good degrees and teaching experience will get you into the best earning bracket rate, a simple TESL certificate is unlikely to further your salary. A masters in TESL is usually needed to teach in the university programs in Canada and other countries, but a few other places will hire candidates with a TESL bachelor's degree.

A TESL certificate online is widely available in Europe, and recently has become available in Australia. Certificate programs normally require completion of 24 to 27 units of course work. A teaching certificate is usually not necessary for those who wish to teach adults. It is common to see overseas job postings requesting the candidate to posses a TEFL certificate or to be a TEFL teacher.

TESL + Creative Writing

Many TESL programs require aspiring teachers to do a great deal of creative writing and other creative activities, such as TESL passive voice activities and exercises. TESL passive voice activities lend to helping the teacher understand casual conversation situations, such as TESL telephone English, and so forth.

Find a TESL journal for examples of these activities, and many other resources that you can use when you actually go to teach your class. Most things from your TESL coursework can also be used in your classes, in fact it is sometimes recommended.
