The GRE GMAT tests are taken by students who are applying for admission to either MBA or other graduate management programs. The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is an exam that is produced and administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS).
The general GRE exam is often required for admission to graduate school, and the subject tests, which are only given in a few select subjects, can be either optional or required depending on the graduate program. GRE testing is usually a must for USA and an assist for top Canadian schools.
Registration And Test Facts
Registration can be completed online on the website for the Educational Testing Service, on the phone by calling 1-800-GRE-CALL, or by mail using the application found in the GRE bulletin (the bulletin can be found online at the ETS website). GRE test results are not valid for more than five years.
Detailed fee schedules and GRE test dates can also be found in the GRE bulletin. Sometimes they publish average GRE scores, and you may be able to find free GRE practice tests too. GRE Subject exams taken at a National Test Center are not reimbursable.
Preparing For The GRE
The computerized GRE is composed of three different content areas, verbal, quantitative, and analytical writing. The computerized GRE may also contain a pretest section. GRE examinees can expect the exam content to change and should also expect to see a major change in test date availability.
GRE prep courses are offered by a number of different companies, and they differ in style. Great video lectures are excellent GRE preparation. A prep course accompanied by a GRE practice test provides the equivalent of a two-month, 50-hour course. There are some free GRE prep programs available as well.
The definition of the words in the word lists is based on Barron's GRE words list (usually known as 33000 word list), American Heritage dictionary, Longman dictionary ,and Oxford dictionary.
Scoring
GRE scores are analyzed to determine areas of strength and weakness for each participant. GRE test scores on each section range from 200 to 800, with scores always being a multiple of 10. The readers will give the essay responses scores on a holistic scale from 0-6.
If the two scores are within one point, the average of the scores is taken. If the two scores differ by more than a point, a third reader examines the response. Scores for the GRE Subject Test are usually reported about six weeks after you take the test. Scores from the computer test are reported 10-15 days after the test is taken. Scores from subsequent administrations will be available within 15 to 18 business days of testing.
